The best fuel saving system is the driver. If you want to really increase your mileage, the best things you can do are things like not driving fast, not accelerating too fast, and when you're on the road, accelerate downhill and ever so slowly decrease your speed uphill. You'll be amazed how much gas you can save.

It's been mentioned a coupla times already, but keep your tires inflated properly. It's not expensive or a lot of work, but helps to keep your mpg up.

Take out all the stuff you always bring but never use. Everything you have to accelerate and drive around will increase your gas consumption.

Like L has mentioned, lower air drag helps you increase your mpg. If you drive a light truck, keep your tail gate up, it reduces the air drag.

Drive the speed limit, don't punch it, slowly accelerate, put it on cruise control, don't leave it running if you stop to talk to someone, stop at railroad crossing, or at a construction stop.

Want to improve your efficiency? Slip on a skirt and lower your coefficient of drag. No, it’s not a suggestion for a way to unwind after a long day behind the wheel. Drag is a measure of how much air resistance your truck encounters as you motor down the highway. Installing side skirts, or fairings, improves airflow and reduces fuel consumption. The lower your drag coefficient, the higher your fuel efficiency. Now that’s advice you can use.

When you change the battery in your smoke detector once a year, change your air filter - you'll recover the cost of the filter and then some in fuel savings.

If you live where it's terribly hot like I do, you want to gas up either very early in the day or very late at night, because you actually get less gas pumped into your vehicle when it's hot versus when it's cold. It adds up.
